Australia

Many of you will know our friend Arad from the delicious date products he sells at local markets all around Tasmania, as well as from his role as a staunch advocate for refugee rights in Australia. Since arriving in Tasmania at the beginning of 2020, Arad has built a tight-knit community around him due to his kind and generous nature and the charismatic flair with which he engages with people from all walks of life.

Arad lovingly produces a variety of specially hand-crafted Persian treats made from dates harvested by his community back in his home country of Iran. The income Arad derives from selling his date delights at his Persia’s Pantry stall at Salamanca markets and various other farmers markets across southern Tasmania is his only way of supporting himself (and his family back in Iran) due to the many restrictions placed on him by his temporary protection visa.

After dealing with the repeated blows that the pandemic has dealt to his business, Arad was off to a good start at the beginning of this year until he started coming into a number of car problems. First, his trusty Peugeot broke down after which he bought a new van so that he could easily transport all of his market gear and wares. Then his van broke down after just a couple of months of use, taking it to the mechanics to be repaired and spending over $4000 for it to only break down again a week later.

The mechanics he went to is now refusing to repair his van again or refund him his money, not to mention that he is now without a set of wheels, needing to borrow vehicles from his friends in order to get himself to the markets each weekend. Arad also lives in a remote part of the Huon Valley and needs his own vehicle for him to be able to meet up with his friends and community and feel connected in what can often be a very isolating situation for him.

We’re hoping to raise enough funds to help Arad buy a new van so that he can start getting out to the markets again and keep supporting himself and filling our community with joy and love through his wonderful food and personality. After taking such a bold stand representing his fellow refugees in protesting for permanent resettlement visas, it is now out turn to help support Arad in being able to contribute and be a part of the Tasmanian community.

Any contribution you can make will be greatly appreciated by Arad and give him the knowledge that there are so many people on this island that care about him. If you know of any suitable vans or vehicles that may be on offer, please let us know, and be sure to check out all of Arad’s amazing products for sale on his website: https://persiaspantry.com.au/.
